"Pod egido ruskega orla" ali orientalistični izleti A. Aškerca

Anton Aškerc, a Slovenian poet at the beginning of the twentieth century, published a travelogue after travelling twice to Russia. Despite the author\u27s claim of its objectivity, Aškerc\u27s relationship to Russia was further complicated by his obvious pan-Slavic bent. This analysis reveals a clear Orientalist bias (to use Edward Said\u27s term) in which Western culture ultimately gains the upper hand

    Comparative Literature in Slovenia

In his article, Comparative Literature in Slovenia, Kristof Jacek Kozak provides a historical overview of the practice of theory in the discipline of comparative literature in Slovenia. Despite its small size and relative low profile, Slovenia is taken as an exemplar within comparative literature scholarship. Kozak observes that the development of comparative literature in Slovenia may be characterized by an attempt to both arbitrate and mediate between distinct poles. On the one hand, Slovenian scholarship has felt the need to secure or determine itself in accordance with its own interests and concerns. On the other hand, it has recognized the need to be in accord with various movements and determinations across national borders. This situation is primarily mediated via the accounts of Janko Kos, a prominent scholar of the field. Via Kos, Kozak traces the origins of comparative literature to various theoretical movements and counter movements, as practiced by principle theoreticians. Whilst a methodological pluralism has emerged, there is resistance to an anything goes approach in Kos\u27s thought as well as by Slovene comparatists in general. This situation is highlighted by the occurrence of recurrent issues, questions, and problems, and the article converges around movements between distinct legacies and poles

Diagnostics of pulverized coal combustion can be carried out in the field of process monitoring and analysis of measurement data. The information about changes in the flame is presented in the form of time series, which can be analyzed in the time and frequency domain. The paper presents an analysis of signals of changes in the intensity of the flame glow during pulverized coal combustion using power spectral density. On the basis of the periodograms determined using the Welch method, it was possible to determine the frequency components present in the signal.

Genetic differentiation of Allium sibiricum L. populations in Poland based on their morphological and molecular markers

Allium sibiricum is one of the rarest plant species in the Sudetes and Carpathians. Inter simple sequence repeat DNA (ISSR) and morphological analyses were conducted to study the biogeographical relationships between geographically disjunctive populations of A. sibiricum in the Carpathians and Sudetes. The results clearly differentiated the Carpathian and Sudetes populations, but also showed a relatively high level of genetic similarity in specimens within certain groups of the Sudetes and Carpathian populations. The plants collected in the Karkonosze probably belong to a mountain form of A. schoenoprasum morphotype C which inhabits natural sites there. In contrast, the study found morphologically and genetically different plants inhabiting Pilsko Mt in the Carpathians. The plants from the Carpathians were present in scattered sites probably due to the activity of Vlach shepherds and the formation of large pastures. The species enlarged its local range due to this type of anthropopressure and likely hybridized with the cultivated Allium plants introduced by the shepherds. This may indicate that the populations on Pilsko Mt are of a partly anthropogenic character

The substantial increase of forest cover in central Poland following extensive land abandonment : Szydłowiec county case study

Nowadays, Poland is one of the European countries most affected by agricultural land abandonment (ALA). Though considered to be a negative phenomenon, ALA opens up several options for planning future land uses critical for biodiversity conservation or future carbon sequestration. So far, many studies of ALA have been done in the mountainous areas in Poland, but less is known about the magnitude of ALA in other regions. In this paper we use the declassified CORONA satellite imagery (1969) to backdate the information on land cover and land abandonment from topographic maps from 1970s for the region located in central Poland and currently affected by widespread ALA. The information from archival materials is compared with current High-Resolution Layers and airborne laser scanning products, indicating that a forest cover increase of 23% was observed. The output of vegetation height analysis confirmed significant land use transformation from non-forest and ALA into forest area. Additionally, analysis of forest pattern change revealed that although forest core areas have increased since 1970, its share in total forest cover decreased due to newly established small forest patches. Our research shows the importance of archival remote sensing materials and indicates their role in understanding ALA-related forest cover change in Poland over the last 50 years

    Kozmopolitizem kot identiteta Aleša Debeljaka

Koncepta lokalnega in globalnega danes pomenita veliko in prav zaradi tega malo. The concepts of local and global today mean a lot and for that very reason little. This issue becomes particularly evident in relation to culture, which cannot be contained within any boundaries. Based on the literary and essayistic work of Aleš Debeljak, the article tries to formulate a different approach to this question, starting from the poet's concept of cosmopolitanism. As a child of the former Yugoslavia, Debeljak understood identity as the spread of concentric circles from Slovenia through Yugoslavia to America. The article thus deals with the opposition of the concept of identity and the positions of local, global and states in between
